A principal representative refers to a senior official of the U.S. Government serving in a foreign country who has been designated by the Secretary of State. A principal representative occupies a position of such importance that the Government should defray the unusual expenses incident to the operation and maintenance of his/her official residence. Official residence of a principal representative means a residence designated by the head of agency for occupancy by a principal representative of an agency.
